A resolution was tabled in Parliament today addressing concerns over the lack of overtime remuneration for employees working in the health and education sectors.

The motion was introduced by Ameen Faisal, Member of Parliament for Kanditheemu.

The purpose of the resolution is twofold: firstly, to gather the views of Members of Parliament regarding the existing regulations governing overtime compensation in these two critical sectors; and secondly, to advocate for the establishment of a fair and equitable framework for the payment of overtime wages.

Furthermore, the resolution formally calls upon the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive review of the current wage system relating to overtime work.

According to the resolution, personnel in both the health and education sectors are frequently required to work extended hours, despite the existence of high standards related to overtime provisions. This mismatch between expectations and actual compensation has contributed to systemic dissatisfaction.

The resolution also highlights growing challenges in recruitment and retention, noting that prospective employees are often deterred by the requirement to work beyond official and regular working hours without appropriate remuneration.
