Preparations are underway to begin utility connections for 100 housing units in Meemu Kolhufushi, months after construction was completed.

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment confirmed that water, sanitation, and electricity works are scheduled to start, following a proposal submitted by Fenaka Corporation. The company cited funding constraints and requested support from the State budget. In response, the Ministry has asked the President’s Office to allocate the required funds.

Although the housing units were completed in January 2025, they remain unoccupied due to the absence of essential services. The delay prompted a formal complaint to the Parliament’s Environment and Climate Change Committee, which has since summoned the relevant agencies to provide clarification.

The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure explained that the lack of utility connections was due to unfinished water and sanitation infrastructure on the island at the time of construction. However, with groundwork now in place, the remaining installations are expected to be completed within 20 weeks.
