The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to resolving the migrant crisis, noting that 7,549 foreign nationals have been repatriated to date.
Speaking on state media's Raajje Miadhu programme, the Minister outlined ongoing measures to address the issue. He said authorities are systematically identifying and deporting individuals involved in criminal activity or residing illegally. Deportations are prioritised in cases involving serious offences or those evading accountability, while broader enforcement continues.
As part of this strategy, the Government launched Operation Kurangi to collect comprehensive data on migrant workers. Biometric information for 151,694 individuals has already been recorded. The Minister stressed that a centralised biometric database is crucial for regulating and monitoring the foreign workforce.
The second phase of the migration response will begin on July 1, 2025, offering legally employed migrant workers an opportunity to regularise their status. A dedicated programme is being developed to support this process.
In parallel, the Ministry has started collecting state fees from employers responsible for bringing in foreign labour, as part of efforts to improve accountability and financial transparency.
Minister Ihusaan also highlighted enhanced cooperation with international partners to control the inflow of foreign workers. Authorities will more closely monitor the activities of expatriates to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
He expressed optimism that a lasting solution to undocumented migration could be achieved by April 2026.
