The Maldives discussed strengthening cooperation in specialised healthcare services and capacity building with Pakistan, as part of an official visit by Health Ministry officials to Islamabad.

During the visit, the Maldivian delegation toured military healthcare institutions, including the Armed Forces Institute of Urology (AFIU) and the Armed Forces Bone Marrow Transplant Center (AFBMTC). The visits aimed to exchange information on advanced treatment services and institutional expertise, while exploring avenues for collaboration in clinical care and training.

In addition to engagements with military health institutions, the delegation also visited Pakistan’s National Institute of Health. Discussions with the Institute’s CEO and team focused on potential cooperation in areas such as field epidemiology training, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring, infection prevention and control (IPC), and strengthening disease surveillance systems. Both sides also explored enhanced technical collaboration, institutional linkages, and expanded training opportunities.

These engagements follow earlier meetings with Pakistan’s Drug Regulatory Authority to discuss strengthening regulatory frameworks for pharmaceuticals. The delegation also held talks with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Pakistan, where discussions centred on advancing training programmes for healthcare professionals, with a particular focus on specialised nursing education.
