The Maldives' first specialised Metabolic Centre has officially opened in Malé City, marking a significant step forward in addressing the country’s growing burden of chronic health conditions.
The facility, developed by the Maldives Neuro Endocrine Medical Facility, is located on Lily Magu and was inaugurated by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim.
The centre is designed to monitor, diagnose, and treat a range of metabolic disorders, including diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and dyslipidaemia.
Senior Consultant at the facility, Dr Mohamed Wisham, stated that the establishment of the centre was driven by the lack of holistic treatment models available for such conditions within existing health institutions.
Equipped with specialised laboratory and diagnostic tools, the centre has introduced a Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system to assist diabetic patients in managing their glucose levels more effectively.
The facility is open to patients of all ages and has launched dedicated patient education and diabetes care guides to support individuals in managing their health conditions. A registrar has also been appointed to assist in providing streamlined care and coordination.
