Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has inaugurated the water pipeline system that will supply the new international passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), a key infrastructure milestone ahead of the terminal’s planned opening on July 26.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the airport and was officiated by MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed. Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Lamaan and senior officials, including members of the MACL Water Supply and Sewerage team, were also in attendance.

The newly commissioned pipeline system spans 1,800 metres, including a 635-metre section built across the lagoon. The installation was completed by MACL’s in-house Water Supply and Sewerage team, who were commended for finishing the project in record time. The decision to assign the task internally was attributed to the need for timely completion and cost efficiency.

During the ceremony, MACL’s managing director acknowledged the ongoing support and guidance from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in driving the airport terminal project forward. He noted that the President has prioritised the development of the new terminal as a key Presidential Pledge and an essential component of the country’s economic gateway.

The new terminal is designed to accommodate 7.5 million passengers annually and will include modern amenities such as airbridges, self-check-in kiosks, an automated baggage handling system, and a visual docking guidance system.
