The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that the reconstruction of the harbour in Shaviyani Narudhoo has reached 72 per cent completion.

In an update on Monday, MTCC stated that rock boulder revetment installation is currently in progress. The project, awarded in April 2022, began physical mobilisation in March 2023.

The project scope includes 55,332 cubic metres of dredging and excavation, a 399-metre breakwater, a 210-metre quay wall, a 205-metre revetment, 955 square metres of concrete pavement, and the installation of navigational and harbour lights.

Narudhoo, home to around 700 residents, relies primarily on agriculture. Local authorities have cited poor harbour conditions as a major obstacle in exporting produce, with limited docking space forcing vessels, especially from other islands, to turn away.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve accessibility and bolster economic activity on the island.
