The Bank of Maldives (BML) has launched a new initiative called ENV POS, allowing customers to support environmental causes by using BML-issued cards for payments via designated Point of Sale (POS) terminals.
Set to begin on July 1, 2025, the programme directs a portion of the Bank’s earnings from each transaction to fund environmental projects across the country. Customers and merchants will not bear any additional costs.
According to BML, the initiative is expected to generate MVR 5.5 million annually based on current transaction volumes. The figure is projected to grow as usage of the Bank’s card payment systems increases.
BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef said the initiative represents a long-term commitment and called on the public to consider the environmental impact of everyday purchases, from groceries to dining out.
Funds collected through ENV POS will be distributed in partnership with non-governmental organisations and other strategic partners. Planned projects include recycling initiatives, reforestation, and improved waste management systems across the islands.
BML said the initiative reflects its broader commitment to sustainable development, community support and national economic growth. The Bank operates a nationwide network of branches, ATMs and digital banking platforms.
