An 18-year-old man has been arrested in Hulhumalé for allegedly assaulting a police officer by driving a motorcycle into a vehicle checkpoint.

The incident occurred at around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday night along Javahirumaa Hingun. According to police, the suspect, identified as Yoonus Khaleel Abdulla, failed to stop at the checkpoint when signalled to do so and instead struck a police officer with the motorcycle.

The officer sustained injuries as a result of the collision. Police have also confirmed that the suspect does not hold a valid driving licence for road vehicles.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
