Warrant Officer 2 Ali Hamid, a veteran of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) who tragically lost his life in a landing craft vessel (LCV) accident at sea, has been laid to rest with full military honours.
The funeral ceremony was held on Wednesday night at 10:45 p.m. at Masjid Zaid bin Thabit.
Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmee, Vice Chief Brigadier General Ahmed Ghiyas, senior officers, and numerous soldiers attended the ceremony and extended their condolences to Warrant Officer Hamid’s family.
Soldiers mounted a ceremonial guard beside the coffin as military honours were rendered.
Following the funeral prayer, the coffin was carried on the shoulders of military pallbearers. Before the burial, the national flag draped over the coffin was ceremonially folded and presented to his family.
The ceremony concluded with a seven-gun salute and the final rendering of military honours.
Warrant Officer Hamid passed away on Tuesday morning after an MNDF landing craft capsized in the Kaashidhoo Kandu channel. He had served the MNDF with honour and dedication for 27 years and was on active duty at the time of the incident. His body was recovered after an extensive search operation and transported to Naifaru Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
