President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to building a healthier and safer nation by intensifying efforts to combat drug-related issues, while actively supporting global initiatives to address the crisis.

In a post shared on X to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the President called for greater recognition of the deep-rooted challenges posed by drug abuse and trafficking.

He highlighted the Government’s progress in addressing the issue through a unified national framework that integrates law enforcement, prevention, treatment, and reintegration.

Tackling the drug problem remains a top priority for the Administration, which is pursuing a focused strategy centred on two key areas: halting the smuggling of drugs into the country and strengthening reintegration programmes for individuals in recovery.

Efforts are also being made to address the issue at its source by targeting and arresting the leaders of drug networks. The Government believes that proposed amendments to the Drugs Act will further empower law enforcement agencies to overcome existing challenges.
