The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has launched an online portal, 'Migrant Connect', to facilitate the submission of complaints by foreign workers in the Maldives.

The new system was introduced alongside the opening of the Migrant Worker Resources Centre, which aims to improve access to support services for migrant workers. The centre was inaugurated by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim and the International Organisation for Migration’s Regional Director, Iori Kato.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister of State for Homeland Security and Technology Dr Abdulla Fairoosh highlighted that every foreign worker in the Maldives should have legal protection and their rights safeguarded. However, he noted that many migrant workers still face challenges such as excessive working hours, unsafe workplaces, and a lack of access to basic information.

According to 2024 data from the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, foreign workers make up 43 per cent of the Maldivian workforce. With such a significant presence, reports of negligence and rights violations are common. Officials hope the new resources will help address these issues more effectively.
