President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to advancing gender equality and fostering a more inclusive parliamentary environment, in a message marking the International Day of Parliamentarism.
In a post shared on X to mark the day, President Dr Muizzu highlighted that the underrepresentation of women in legislatures remains a significant challenge both globally and in the Maldives.
The President emphasised the crucial role parliaments play in upholding democracy and fostering good governance. He also highlighted the profound responsibility of parliaments to ensure transparency, develop effective policies, and, above all, serve the people with vigilance and integrity.
In conclusion, the President urged a renewed dedication to the principles that empower parliaments to serve the people with purpose, transparency, and integrity.
Observed annually on June 30, the International Day of Parliamentarism was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to coincide with the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1889, the global organisation of national parliaments.
The day underscores the vital role of parliaments in strengthening democracy, ensuring government accountability, and amplifying the voices of the people. It also serves as a moment to assess global parliamentary progress, address persistent issues such as the underrepresentation of women and youth, and advocate for more inclusive, transparent, and effective legislative institutions.
