The Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, has confirmed that the primary construction works of Hanimaadhoo International Airport are approaching completion.
In an update shared via X, Dr Muththalib reported that 88.7 per cent of the overall project has been completed. He noted that the construction of a 2.7-kilometre runway, a central component of the airport has been fully finalised.
In addition to the runway, substantial progress has been achieved across various other components of the project. The Minister indicated that 83 per cent of the work on the passenger terminal has been completed. Furthermore, he revealed that 96 per cent of the construction associated with the fuel farm, which encompasses the air traffic control towers and cargo buildings is also now finished.
Looking ahead, Minister Dr Muththalib stated that the Ministry is targeting completion of the airport by September this year.
The development contract for Hanimaadhoo International Airport was awarded in 2022 to India’s Kalapataru Projects International Limited (KPIL). Construction commenced in January 2023, with the project scheduled to conclude within a two-year timeframe.
The financing of the project is being facilitated through a USD 800 million line of credit extended by the Exim Bank of India. Of this sum, USD 136 million has been allocated specifically for the Hanimaadhoo Airport development.
