Income from fish exports rose by 40 per cent in the first five months of the year, according to the latest industry statistics report from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

Fish product export earnings reached USD 63.7 million during this period, up from USD 45.5 million in the same timeframe last year.

April recorded the highest monthly income at USD 18.2 million. Except for January, monthly revenues for the first five months averaged over USD 10 million, compared to less than USD 10 million on average during the same period last year.

Income from Fish Exports (January–May):

  • January: USD 8.6 million
  • February: USD 13.3 million
  • March: USD 12.4 million
  • April: USD 18.2 million
  • May: USD 11.2 million

The increase in income is driven by a significant rise in export volumes. A total of 38,800.6 metric tonnes of fish were exported in the first five months of this year, representing a 66.1 per cent increase compared to 23,356.1 metric tonnes during the same period last year. April was the peak month, with 9,700 metric tonnes shipped.
