The school currently under construction in Hulhumalé has been named in honour of Sultan Ali VI.

The decision, made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, was formally announced by Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu during a visit to inspect the project’s progress.

Speaking after the inspection, Minister Dr Shafeeu confirmed that the institution has been officially named Shaheed Ali School. Construction is expected to be completed by November 2025, with preparations under way to begin classes in January of the following year.

The school has already opened student enrolment and announced that it will operate in two sessions if the number of applicants exceeds capacity.

Sultan Ali VI, also known as Ali Rasgefaanu, is remembered for courageously resisting the Portuguese in defence of the Maldives. He was martyred on the first of Sha'ban, a date now commemorated annually as Martyrs’ Day (Shaheedhunge Dhuvas) in the Maldives.
