The Prosecutor General’s Office has confirmed that two individuals arrested during protests over the April 18 incident involving Yumnu Rasheed are now facing charges after refusing to enter a conditional advisory agreement.

The individuals, Abdulla Mahzoom Majid and Aishath Shiman, were detained during demonstrations sparked by public outrage following the discovery of the young woman on the roof of a building in Malé under suspicious circumstances.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, both suspects were offered the option of signing a Conditional Cautioning Agreement under Section 100 of the Criminal Procedure Code. This legal provision allows suspects accused of minor offences to be counselled and released without formal prosecution, provided they sign an agreement with the state.

However, both Mahzoom and Shiman declined the offer. As a result, both Mahzoom and Shiman are facing charges.Their detention was initially extended after arrest, but both have since been released on bail.

A spokesperson for the PG Office stated that while the decision to proceed with prosecution has been made, the option to sign the advisory agreement remains open should the suspects reconsider.

The arrests occurred in the context of widespread protests demanding accountability and transparency in the investigation into the April 18 case, which has drawn significant public attention.
