Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has introduced new restrictions on carrying and using power banks aboard its flights, in line with international aviation safety regulations.

In a press statement, the airline said the revised policy complies with guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Maldivian is the first airline in the Maldives to implement such standards.

Key points of the new policy include:

  • Power banks are not allowed in checked baggage or overhead compartments
  • Passengers may carry up to two power banks
  • Each power bank must not exceed 100 watt-hours in capacity
  • Power banks must be kept in hand luggage and stored under the seat or in the seat pocket
  • Charging power banks or using them to charge other devices during the flight is prohibited
  • Cables must not be exposed or pose any electrical hazard
  • All power banks must meet UN standards for electrical equipment

The carriage of power banks in checked luggage has already been prohibited under existing regulations. The revision follows a recent ICAO aviation safety audit of the Maldives.
