President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the president of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump, in the wake of the catastrophic flooding that has severely impacted central Texas and resulted in the loss of numerous lives.
In his message to president Trump, President Dr Muizzu expressed deep sorrow over the scale of the devastation. He conveyed, on behalf of the Government and people of the Maldives, sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and to all those affected by the unfolding humanitarian crisis.
President Dr Muizzu also offered his sincere hopes for the success of the ongoing rescue and relief operations. He extended his best wishes for the swift recovery of the impacted communities and the rapid restoration of normalcy in the affected areas.
The tragedy unfolded on Friday when sudden flash flooding caused the Guadalupe River near Kerrville to rise dramatically by 20 to 26 feet. The floodwaters led to widespread destruction, including road washouts and severe damage to local infrastructure.
The death toll has since climbed to 70 across six counties, with Kerr County bearing the heaviest loss. Local officials reported 59 fatalities in the county, comprising 38 adults and 21 children. In addition, 11 children remain unaccounted for from Camp Mystic, a local site hit hard by the disaster.
In response to the crisis, President Trump signed a major disaster declaration for Kerr County. The declaration enables first responders to access essential resources as they continue critical search and recovery operations throughout the region.
