Under a special operation to combat cyberbullying, the Maldives Police Service has blocked numerous social media pages targeting school children. Platforms like Instagram, popular among students, have been increasingly used for online harassment.
The Police Cyber Crime Centre recently shut down 22 Instagram confession pages linked to schools in Malé city. Additionally, the Family and Child Protection Unit and Cyber Crime Centre are investigating 20 more similar pages.
Police warn that cyberbullying is a growing concern, with many students falling victim. Often, these pages are created and run by students themselves to conceal identities while spreading false information, insults, and ridicule against peers and teachers. Such content can cause serious psychological harm.
Threatening messages found on some confiscated pages have prompted police to vow legal action against offenders under Maldivian law. Authorities urge victims and the public to report information to the Cyber Crime Centre to support ongoing investigations
