The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has opened applications for permits to import vehicles other than two-wheelers, ahead of new rules that will take effect on July 13, 2025.

In April, the Ministry amended its regulations to prohibit the import of four-wheelers without an approved garage permit. Under these rules, importers of four-wheel vehicles will be required to obtain permission from the Ministry before importing vehicles into the Maldives.

The Ministry has now published a notice in the Government Gazette stating that, starting July 13, permits will be required for all vehicles except two-wheelers. Applications for these permits can be submitted through the Ministry’s online portal, with application forms also available at the Ministry’s website and reception.

When applying for a permit to import a road vehicle, applicants must submit a copy of the permit for the garage, showroom, or warehouse where the vehicle will be stored, along with other required vehicle documents.

The changes are largely aimed at easing congestion in the Greater Malé area. According to recent research, there are approximately 30,000 more vehicles in Malé City than the number recommended for safe and efficient operations, with 7,505 of those being four-wheelers. The import license system is intended to help manage this issue by encouraging proper parking arrangements and reducing traffic congestion.
