More than 5,000 people have accessed the national mental health helpline since the beginning of this year, the Ministry of Health has announced.
The National Helpline, launched on February 21, 2024, was established to provide immediate mental health first aid and support to those experiencing mental health difficulties. The helpline operates under the national number 1677, available 24 hours a day.
According to the Ministry, a total of 2,576 people used the helpline during 2024. From January to July 5 this year alone, 5,820 people have already reached out for assistance.
Calls to the helpline have included requests for information about mental health services, general health-related inquiries, psychological support, crisis intervention, follow-ups, and referrals to other services.
The helpline is intended to support individuals of all ages facing mental health challenges by providing immediate mental health first aid, problem-solving assistance, and links to relevant resources.
A 2022 STEP survey highlighted that one in five Maldivians experience symptoms of depression, while one in 20 contemplate life-threatening behaviours. These findings underline the critical need for accessible and effective mental health services.
The Ministry of Health emphasised that the helpline is a vital resource for individuals in distress, offering timely support and specialised care, and promoting the importance of mental well-being throughout the community.
