The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has joined the Government’s Five Million Tree Planting Program with a commitment to plant 100,000 trees as part of the country’s largest reforestation initiative.
The programme was officially launched by MACL with a tree-planting event held near the new terminal of Velana International Airport. The ceremony was inaugurated by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, and attended by MACL Managing Director and CEO Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed along with other company officials.
Launched on June 5, 2024, to mark World Environment Day, the Five Million Trees Program is a key component of the Government’s broader environmental conservation efforts.
The national programme involves planting 90 species of trees, including rare indigenous varieties, shade trees, and fruit-bearing species, on islands throughout the country. Over 500,000 trees have already been planted under the initiative.
While the Government targets planting two million trees by the end of 2025, participation from private organisations has raised the total goal to 6.3 million trees.
