The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed harbour pavement and drainage works as part of the Noonu Lhohi harbour redevelopment project, the company confirmed in a project update shared on Monday.

Initiated by the Government in 2022, the project was awarded to MTCC on December 29 of that year and officially mobilised on August 8, 2023.

Located approximately 182 kilometres north of Malé, Lhohi is near Manadhoo, the capital of Noonu Atoll, with Miladhoo and Magoodhoo as the nearest neighbouring islands.

The development includes major upgrades such as dredging of the existing harbour with a volume of 66,701.94 cubic metres, dredging a new harbour channel of 2,205 cubic metres, construction of a 321.7 metre breakwater, 95 metre revetment, 50 metre groynes, a 366 metre quay wall, 1,720 square metres of pavement, a concrete jetty, and a ramp.

Funded through the State budget at a cost of MVR 68 million, the project aims to address long-standing infrastructure issues. The current harbour, constructed after the 2004 tsunami, is among the oldest in the Maldives.

Residents have said that damage to the harbour's original structure has limited its economic potential, particularly in supporting the local fishing industry. The ice plant located within the harbour, intended to supply ice for fishermen, has been underutilised due to the poor condition of the harbour.

The redevelopment is expected to improve accessibility, safety, and economic opportunities for the people of Lhohi and nearby islands.
