Parliament receives 8 applications for JSC public representative post

Eight individuals have submitted their candidacies to represent the public on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). 

According to the Maldives Constitution, Parliament is required to appoint one member from the general public to the 10-member JSC

The application period for the position closed on July 3. During Tuesday’s parliamentary session, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that eight candidates had applied for the public representative role on the JSC.

The candidates are: 

  • Ibrahim Zahid / Lilymaage, Vaadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll
  • Ahmed Ali / Hulhumale’, Flat 108-G-1
  • Ali Amir / Ma. Penzyvilla
  • Idrees Fauzy / Fahivaage, Kalaidhoo, Laamu Atoll
  • Ahmed Shafiu / Udhares, Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll
  • Dr. Hussain Faiz / Dhaftharu No. R.S. 1325
  • Hassan Waheed / Rankokaage, Kurinbi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll
  • Ali Mohamed Manik / Dhaftharu No. R.S. 1851

The speaker has forwarded the eight nominees to the Parliamentary Judiciary Committee to begin the review process. 

The term of office for a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is five years, with no possibility of nomination for a second term. The Parliament is currently seeking to replace the incumbent public representative on the JSC whose term is nearing expiration.

The JSC comprises the Speaker of Parliament; three judges representing the Supreme Court, High Court, and lower courts respectively; representatives from Parliament and the public; as well as an appointee designated by the President.
