The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development (MoHE) has announced that it is working to secure funds to cover a newly imposed service tax on international students studying in Malaysia.
In an official statement, the Ministry said efforts are ongoing to ensure that students on Government loans are supported in meeting the new financial obligation. For those studying under scholarships, the Ministry confirmed that disbursements will include the tax once it appears on invoices.
Malaysia began enforcing a 6 percent service tax on private education services for international students on July 1, 2025. The tax applies to private preschools, schools, colleges, universities, and language centres that cater to non-Malaysian students.
The new tax measure is part of Malaysia’s revised Sales and Service Tax (SST) regulations. Private education providers that charge more than RM60,000 annually in tuition are required to register for the tax.
Malaysia is a popular destination for Maldivian students pursuing higher education. The new tax has raised concerns among students and parents about increased financial burdens, prompting calls for government assistance.
