The Ministry of Defence has announced that 1,244 young people have applied to join the National Service Programme, a key Government initiative aimed at developing a skilled and capable generation.
According to a statement published in the Government Gazette on Tuesday, all applicants will be given the opportunity to complete the training. Placement will be offered in the order of form submission, and the Ministry intends to launch a second round once the current batch concludes its training.
The Ministry stated that shortlisted applicants will be notified of the selection process and training locations. Selection will be conducted across different regions of the country to allow participants to attend training at their nearest centre.
The National Service Programme is a flagship initiative of the Administration and aligns with the Government’s broader policy to empower youth through structured training, education, and civic engagement. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously said that, starting in 2025, the programme will be conducted annually.
The President has also confirmed that a legal framework is being finalised for the programme. Participants are expected to receive a monthly allowance of approximately MVR 6,000.
