Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has confirmed that the new cargo handling facility under development at Thilafushi is scheduled to commence operations within the month of July.

The announcement was made by MPL Manager Ibrahim Visham Rasheed during an appearance on PSM News' 'Raajje Miadhu' programme. He noted that the facility forms a key component of the first phase of the Thilafushi port development project and is now fully prepared to begin functioning. As part of its initial infrastructure, the terminal features a metre-long bridge which is expected to enhance operational stability and efficiency.

Visham stated that the tendering phase of the project is currently in progress and expressed hope that the second part of the first phase will be completed within a year of the contract being awarded.

The facility has been designed with the capacity to store between 1,600 to 1,800 containers simultaneously. Rasheed stated that this significant storage capability will allow for quicker handling and disposal of containers, thereby streamlining port operations. He further explained that the existing boat-mounted crane system will be replaced by two mobile harbour cranes to be installed at MPL. This upgrade is anticipated to considerably improve both the speed and safety of cargo movement.

Building on this development, Rasheed underscored the broader economic impact of the project. He pointed out that enhanced efficiency and reduced operational costs will deliver tangible benefits to the general public as well as to commercial enterprises. He also reaffirmed MPL's commitment to accelerating the project's timeline, aligning it with the Government’s national economic objectives.

In addition to the cargo facility, the project will see the construction of a 750-metre domestic quay. This will be supported by a structured system for loading vessels and transporting cleared goods to various islands and resort destinations.
