The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, held a productive meeting with senior officials from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to assess the status of ongoing development projects and to discuss avenues for future cooperation. Particular attention was given to renewable energy and climate adaptation, two key priorities for the Maldives.
In attendance were ADB’s Regional Head, Thiam Hee Ng, and Senior Economist, Elisabetta Gentile, who joined Minister Thoriq. The meeting provided an opportunity to review the progress of ADB-funded initiatives currently being implemented across the country. Both sides examined how these efforts align with the Maldives Government’s broader sustainable development agenda, and identified areas where collaboration could be further enhanced.
Renewable energy featured prominently in the discussions, reflecting its strategic importance as the Maldives works to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. This priority is central to the country’s long-term energy security and environmental commitments.
In parallel, climate adaptation was recognised as a critical area requiring continued focus and investment.
