The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has officially commenced harbour development work on Noonu Foddhoo, aiming to enhance accessibility and stimulate economic growth in the area.
With a population of 504, Foddhoo is known for its expanding guesthouse industry, currently hosting five operational guesthouses. However, the island has long suffered from inadequate harbour infrastructure, forcing tourists and locals to rely on a seasonal jetty only usable during the western monsoon. The lack of a proper harbour has posed significant logistical challenges for visitors and residents alike.
In response to these concerns, the Government awarded the development contract to MTCC. The project valued at MVR 49.77 million, includes the excavation of a new harbour basin with a volume of 30,648 cubic metres, backfilling of 3,990 cubic metres, construction of 145 metres of outer breakwater, 165 metres of revetment, and 130 metres of quay wall. Additionally, a 125-metre-long, 6-metre-wide jetty will be built, along with a 600-square-metre paved area. Lighting installations, including navigation and harbour lights, are also part of the plan.
According to MTCC, the project will deliver a spacious, modern harbour designed to meet the growing demands of Foddhoo’s economy and transport needs. The development is expected to significantly ease travel for both residents and tourists, while also supporting the island’s tourism and trade activities.
MTCC, established in 1980, has played a pivotal role in national development, having completed numerous infrastructure projects across the Maldives over the past four decades.
