The construction of the new Arabiyya School building is scheduled for completion by November 2026, according to Minister of Education Ismail Shafeeu.
The announcement was made during the ceremony held to commence the project, which is being undertaken by Rashid Carpentry and Construction (RCC). The project was awarded to RCC at MVR 83 million less than the initial contractor’s proposed cost. Construction officially commenced following the laying of the foundation in November 2024.
The new school is being developed on a plot near Maafannu Stadium, replacing the former Arabiya School building which had fallen into disrepair. Students were previously relocated to temporary premises due to unsafe conditions.
Speaking to local media, Minister Shafeeu said the new facility will be a modern, purpose-built school, fulfilling a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to enhance educational infrastructure. The 10-storey structure will house 42 classrooms, a multipurpose hall, four elevators, and modern amenities.
For the first time in the capital, a dedicated underground parking area will be included in a school facility, offering space for over 200 vehicles, including motorcycles and cars. The building will also feature rooftop areas intended for use by students, teachers, and community groups.
The current students of Arabiya School are temporarily studying at the former Dharumavantha School building, after earlier plans to relocate them to other facilities proved unsustainable due to space limitations.
Originally, the Government had considered constructing the school on the site of the former Jamaluddin School, but the location was later shifted to a plot on Iyazuddin School’s premises.
The Ministry of Education has stated that once complete, the new Arabiya School will significantly improve the learning environment for students and better support the educational needs of the growing population in Malé.
