Velana International Airport (VIA) has successfully completed the first trial of its new passenger terminal check-in system, in collaboration with the national airline, Maldivian.
The exercise tested essential services and systems ahead of the terminal’s opening and forms part of the airport’s broader Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process.
The trial focused on validating the functionality of the airline’s check-in counters, equipment, and boarding pass printing systems, while also providing an opportunity to train staff on key operational tasks. Conducted using staff from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the test confirmed that critical information technology infrastructure is functioning as intended.
MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed led the trial, becoming the first passenger to check in at the new facility. He was joined by Deputy Managing Directors Mohamed Lamaan and Mujthaba Latheef, and other company officials.
Following the trial, Shareef conveyed his confidence in the terminal's progress, describing it as a proud moment and noting that the process had begun. He indicated that the next steps would involve introducing high-speed vessels and officially opening the facility, whilst observing that staff members were excited and filled with national pride.
As part of celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence, the new terminal will initially serve Maldivian’s international routes. Services for other international airlines operating at VIA are expected to transition to the new terminal before the start of the upcoming tourism season.
