Maldives Immigration has detained 37 foreign nationals found to be living or working in violation of immigration regulations, as part of an ongoing enforcement campaign across the country.

The latest operation, conducted in Malé’s Dhilbahaaru Magu area, targeted businesses following public complaints regarding undocumented foreign workers. Immigration officers inspected several establishments to verify work permits and visa compliance. A total of 31 individuals were taken into custody during the raid.

Earlier this month, a similar operation in the Hulhumalé Phase 1 market area resulted in the detention of 15 foreign nationals. According to Immigration, 47 people have been detained so far this month for violations.

Statistics shared with MMTV show that 2,446 individuals were deported from the Maldives between November 17, 2023, and 21 April 21, 2025. This includes 908 deported for criminal offences, 1,495 for visa violations, and 43 for illegal entry.

This figure surpasses the 2,165 deportations recorded in the five years prior, from 2019 to November 2023. Annual deportation numbers during that period ranged from 280 to 701.

Officials say Immigration is now maintaining more detailed records and strengthening oversight mechanisms as part of broader efforts to ensure lawful employment practices and improve regulation of foreign workers in the Maldives.
