The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has reported a substantial increase in zakat al-mal collections, receiving MVR 10.6 million in June 2025,  more than double the amount recorded in the same month last year.

According to MIRA’s latest financial report, zakat al-mal revenue rose by 145 per cent compared to June 2024, when MVR 4.3 million was collected. The authority also revealed that total zakat receipts for the year so far stand at MVR 61.5 million, marking a 21 per cent increase over the MVR 50.8 million collected during the same period in 2024.

Zakat al-mal is a religious obligation required of Muslims who have possessed wealth above a designated threshold known as nisab for one Hijri year. In the Maldives, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs determines the nisab based on prevailing global gold prices. The most recent update, issued in April, sets the nisab at MVR 9,264.15.

Those who meet this threshold must contribute 2.5 per cent of their qualifying wealth, including savings, investments, and other forms of property, as zakat. Payments can be made at any time of the year, although MIRA continues to collect and report monthly figures.
