In anticipation of the 60th Independence Day of the Maldives, the Republic Square area has been temporarily closed to the public as part of the national preparations.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, the area will remain inaccessible from July 10 to July 25. The closure has been implemented to facilitate extensive renovation and beautification works aimed at readying the site for the upcoming national celebrations.
Independence Day, observed annually on July 26, will be marked this year with a wide range of commemorative events. Among the key highlights are the celebrations scheduled for the evening of July 26 at the Republic Square, which will include performances and demonstrations by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), along with cultural presentations by students from various schools.
In addition to the events at Republic Square, the Government has announced a broader programme of festivities taking place across Male' and Hulhumale'. These will feature themed floral displays, traditional games, parades, route marches, and a fireworks display, all of which are expected to draw significant public participation.
The day holds historical significance for the nation, signifying the Maldives’ independence following an agreement signed while under British protection. Each year, the date is commemorated as a symbol of national pride and sovereignty.
