Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has met with the United States Ambassador to the Maldives, Hugo Yon, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in the environmental sector.
The meeting took place at the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, where both sides explored potential areas of collaboration, with a focus on investments in environment-friendly energy generation. The discussions included opportunities for clean energy development, particularly solar energy, which has been identified as a key area of interest for both nations.
The Maldivian Government has been pursuing a number of initiatives aimed at transforming the national energy system and advancing environmental sustainability. During the meeting, the Minister and the Ambassador reviewed ways the United States could support these efforts, especially through investments in clean energy infrastructure. The talks also covered issues of environmental cooperation, including climate adaptation, sustainable energy policies, and joint initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.
Earlier this year, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the launch of Project Solar City during his official visit to Singapore. The project, designated as the Maldives' first Special Economic Zone (SEZ), aims to install a 100MW solar power system and is a flagship effort in the country's transition to renewable energy.
