The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a white alert covering a wide stretch of the northern and central atolls, warning of adverse weather expected throughout the day.

The alert is in effect from 6:00 p.m. to 00:00 a.m. and includes the atolls of Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa, Baa, Lhaviyani, Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Vaavu, Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu, and Thaa. The MET Office forecasts sustained winds between 19 and 24 miles per hour, with gusts possibly reaching up to 45 miles per hour during this period.

In addition to strong winds, the forecast includes heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in the northern atolls. Cloudy skies and scattered showers are also expected across the affected regions with wave heights anticipated to reach 5 to 7 feet.

The MET Office has cautioned residents, visitors, and maritime operators to take necessary precautions. Small vessel operators are particularly urged to exercise vigilance and avoid travel during adverse weather, given the heightened risks at sea. Authorities have also warned that inter-atoll transport services may face delays or cancellations due to the deteriorating conditions, and travellers are advised to confirm schedules with transport providers before embarking on journeys.
