The Malé City Group of Hospitals is working to expand and upgrade healthcare services across the capital, including a major new addition to Hulhumalé Hospital and developments at hospitals in Malé and Vilimalé, according to CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem.

Speaking to State media, the CEO said the group is currently working to arrange financing for the construction of a 10-storey building at Hulhumalé Hospital. The new building, planned for a vacant plot on the hospital’s premises, will include 250 beds and private rooms. The budget for the project is being prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure.

In addition to the new building, a 28-bed ward is also under development at Hulhumalé Hospital and is expected to be completed within the year. These developments follow recent service upgrades, including the launch of an Advanced Wound Care Clinic in April and the opening of an expanded emergency ward in May.

CEO Haleem outlined ongoing efforts to develop all four facilities under the Malé Group of Hospitals: Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Dharumavantha Hospital, Hulhumalé Hospital, and Vilimalé Hospital. Collectively, these hospitals serve thousands of patients daily.

At IGMH, the busiest hospital in the capital, bed capacity has been increased and existing wards are being upgraded to meet modern standards, including full air conditioning. The hospital is also preparing to introduce several new services.

“We are also working to start cardiothoracic surgery to expand our service offerings. Interventional radiology will follow. There are many more services we aim to introduce,” Haleem said.

Significant changes are also planned for Vilimalé Hospital. The existing hospital will be relocated to facilitate the construction of a new 112-bed facility. Once the land is cleared, the contractor will be handed over the site, and the new hospital is expected to begin construction either later this year or in early 2026.
