Preparations are in full swing in Haa Alifu Utheemu for this year’s National Day celebrations, with the island’s council, local organisations, and residents collaborating to ready the island for the event.

A dedicated budget was allocated earlier this year, with implementation of projects starting on 5 July. The decision to host the celebrations in Utheemu was announced in January during a presidential visit to the island.

According to Utheemu Council President Abdulla Rasheed, a special task force comprising the council, community groups, and clubs has been established to coordinate the preparations. He said the works are being carried out with strong public involvement, with residents of all ages contributing to the efforts.

Ongoing projects include the construction of a travel shelter at the harbour, the development of a children’s park, and a parents’ shelter at the local school. Island-wide clean-up operations are also underway as part of the preparations.

The Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage is working alongside the council to organise cultural programmes and other events that will be part of the National Day festivities. Planned activities will involve preserving and maintaining key sites on the island, including Utheemu Ganduvaru, and implementing programmes aimed at fostering national unity and patriotism.
