President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will develop a designated island in every atoll as a picnic island, with research already underway and work expected to commence soon.

Addressing residents of Alifu Alifu Mathiveri during his tour of the atoll, the President said the initiative responds to longstanding concerns from island communities about the lack of family-friendly recreational spaces. He noted that many residents face difficulties in finding suitable locations for outings or for local tourism use, adding that the programme would empower communities while also promoting tourism.

The President also revealed several major projects for Mathiveri. He confirmed that the Government will establish an airport on the island, with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) tasked with investing in, developing and operating the facility.

President Dr Muizzu further announced that the long-delayed construction of Mathiveri School has been reassigned to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) following the cancellation of the previous contract. Similarly, the stalled health centre project will be reassigned to ensure its completion. This, he noted, is owing to the original contractor’s failure to deliver on the project despite having received partial payment.

He pledged that the health centre would be fully upgraded, equipped with necessary physical and human resources, and able to deliver quality healthcare. He underlined that completing unfinished projects and strengthening essential services were key priorities for his Administration.

Reaffirming his development commitments, the President stressed that his Government is determined to honour all election pledges. “Every pledge I have made is an obligation I intend to fulfil,” he said.
