Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xinhua, has stated that the strengthening of relations between the Maldives and China is already delivering tangible benefits, particularly in trade and investment.
Speaking to State media, the Ambassador highlighted that demand for Maldivian products has grown significantly since the implementation of the Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) earlier this year. He noted that certain fish products, which were not previously exported to China, are now entering the Chinese market under the agreement, providing new opportunities for local businesses and exporters.
The Ambassador explained that Beijing and Malé are working closely together to further promote Maldivian products in China, with the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade actively involved in facilitating market access. He expressed confidence that the impact of these efforts would become more visible within the next one to two years, as trade volumes expand and more sectors benefit from bilateral cooperation.
Ambassador Kong emphasised that the partnership not only supports Maldivian exporters but also strengthens investment prospects, underscoring the broader economic and social dividends of deepening ties.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China were formally established in 1972, and the Ambassador described the current phase as one of the most significant in terms of practical gains for the Maldivian people.
