Ten farmers from Shaviyani Goidhoo have been awarded the Maldives Good Agricultural Practices (MGAP) certificate, recognising their commitment to safe, eco-friendly and sustainable farming practices.

The certificates were formally presented on 28 August by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Maryam Mariya, who praised the people of Goidhoo for setting an example in balancing modern agricultural methods with traditional ways of life.

The MGAP certification, introduced nationally to enhance food security and improve farming standards, ensures that agricultural produce is grown with minimal environmental impact while safeguarding public health. Certified farmers are required to use regulated levels of plant nutrients and chemicals, adopt efficient water management practices, and maintain high standards in food safety and environmental protection.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dr Mariya described the recognition as a milestone in Goidhoo’s agricultural history and a testament to the dedication and innovation of local farmers. She emphasised that their work would inspire the next generation, adding that the achievement positions Goidhoo as a model of sustainable development for the country.

The Ministry highlighted that MGAP certification gives consumers confidence that local produce meets required standards for food and medicinal use, while also supporting long-term economic growth.
