The 4th Dhiraagu International Inline Speed Skating Championship is set to commence in the Maldives this Thursday, with events scheduled to take place across Malé and Hulhumalé from 4 to 6 September.

Organised by Skate Maldives, the three-day tournament will feature both local and international athletes. Speaking to State media, Skate Maldives President Mohamed Hanim confirmed that neighbouring countries India, Sri Lanka and Nepal were initially expected to participate, though only Nepal has formally confirmed its entry. The Nepalese contingent comprises eight skaters and two officials, scheduled to arrive in Malé on 3 September.

According to Hanim, India had prepared to send 22 riders but was unable to commit due to timing constraints, while Sri Lanka faced challenges obtaining the necessary permissions from its Ministry of Education as the competition coincided with school days. Despite these setbacks, Hanim expressed confidence that the presence of Nepal would ensure international representation at the event.

Competitions will be held across multiple age groups, starting from under-5 skaters up to the masters category for adults. Events will be contested in divisions including 5–7 years, 7–9 years, 9–11 years, 11–13 years, 13–15 years, 15–17 years, 18–30 years, and above 30. Both male and female skaters are eligible to participate across these categories.

Tournament Director Abdulla Rasheed stated that preparations had been finalised, with arrangements made for venues, transportation, first aid, medical support, and logistics. The championship will open with races in Hulhumalé, and conclude in Malé.

The 3rd edition of the Inline Speed Skating Championship, held in 2023, saw 79 skaters compete across 10 categories, drawing strong participation. Organisers expect this year’s event to build on that success, despite the reduced number of international teams.
