Career guidance programmes and engineering site visits have been conducted across the Maldives to celebrate the country’s first official celebration of Engineers’ Day, observed annually on 30 August.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure in partnership with the Ministry of Education and State-owned companies, was aimed at introducing students to the engineering field and raising awareness of career opportunities. According to officials, programmes were held in 28 educational institutions across the nation, with further activities scheduled through the end of September.
As part of the initiative, students from universities and colleges visited major infrastructure and development sites, including the Boduthakurufaanu Magu Development Project, Velana International Airport worksites, and Aman Udhares Towers in Hulhumalé. The Male’-Thilafushi Link Project was also showcased to engineering students from The Maldives National University.
State-owned utilities played a key role: Fenaka Corporation delivered career guidance sessions in 23 schools, while STELCO organised both career talks and visits to powerhouses, gaving students direct exposure to engineering practices in the energy sector.
The Ministry of Construction said the programme was designed to build confidence, inspire young people, and highlight engineering’s role in national development. Officials described the initiative as a national success in its first year.
Engineers’ Day was declared a national occasion by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to commemorate the inauguration of the Sinamalé Bridge in 2018, one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects. From this year onwards, 30 August will be celebrated annually to honour the contributions of Maldivian engineers.
