The Maldives Correctional Service has launched a new rehabilitation initiative, Ungenema, for children serving sentences or awaiting trial in juvenile correctional centres at Aseri Jail.
The programme, which runs from 25 August to 20 September 2025, is designed to provide religious education, personal development training, and emotional support for young offenders. Prison authorities confirmed that four children are currently enrolled in the first round of activities.
As part of the programme, participants will attend sessions on laws and regulations, mental health awareness, and personal development. Religious components include prayer workshops and seminars focused on Islamic teachings, with the aim of instilling a stronger attachment to faith and encouraging adherence to moral values.
Correctional officials stated that Ungenema also focuses on raising emotional awareness, building self-confidence, and teaching children how to recognise and accept themselves. By combining psychological approaches with faith-based learning, the initiative seeks to help participants develop patience, discipline, and resilience in dealing with life’s challenges.
The broader objective, according to the Correctional Service, is to prepare young offenders for reintegration into society. Organisers hope the programme will ensure that children return to their communities with sufficient knowledge, improved emotional wellbeing, and a commitment to live free of crime.
