The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced that the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been assigned to deliver teak trees to seven atolls as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ‘Five Million Trees Planting Programme.’

The programme is part of the Administration’s pledge to restore and strengthen greenery and biodiversity across the islands. The teak trees, donated by neighbouring Sri Lanka, will be distributed to inhabited islands, resorts, and airport areas. Officials noted that the Government aims to reintroduce the trees, once common in island communities but now increasingly rare, and make them a distinctive feature in Maldivian landscapes.

According to the Ministry, MTCC will oversee the transfer of the trees to the designated atolls. The effort reflects the President’s wider commitment to environmental protection and climate resilience through reforestation and biodiversity initiatives.

So far, 650,000 saplings have been planted under the programme, with the Government expecting the final total to reach 6.4 million trees. In addition to teak, the initiative includes various types of garden and shade trees, with island communities identified as key beneficiaries of the replanting effort.
