The Maldives has launched its first-ever certificate-level course in sign language, offered by the Maldives National University (MNU) in collaboration with the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

The new six-month programme, open to anyone over the age of 18, requires applicants to have completed GCSE or attained a Level 2 qualification.

In addition to the new course, the Ministry recently conducted an online sign language programme for staff of Government institutions and companies, enabling them to better serve hearing-impaired clients. More than 130 participants from various agencies completed the training.

The Ministry is also preparing to launch an advanced online programme in sign language as part of its continued efforts to familiarise the wider community with sign language.
