The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to the Maldives following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula at 11:58 p.m. local time on Thursday.
Earlier this week, the MET had issued a similar statement after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the same region, assuring the public that the tremors posed no risk of tsunami waves reaching Maldivian shores.
In July, an 8.8 magnitude mega-quake off Kamchatka’s coast triggered a powerful tsunami that swept part of a coastal village into the sea and prompted warnings across the Pacific region.
The Kamchatka Peninsula lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly active seismic zone along the Pacific tectonic plate. The area is known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity, making it one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
