President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will raise the overseas payment limits for Bank of Maldives (BML) debit cards, alongside new measures to expand international payment options for Maldivians.

Speaking at the community meeting in Meemu Muli, the President confirmed that, effective 11 November, the 43rd anniversary of the Bank of Maldives, the overseas point-of-sale (POS) spending limit on BML debit cards will be increased to USD 1,000. He added that the limit for airline ticket purchases and hotel payments abroad will rise to USD 3,000, while travellers seeking medical care overseas will be able to pay medical expenses directly via debit cards upon request.

The President also revealed that the Bank of Maldives will begin issuing UnionPay debit and credit cards from 1 January 2026. The cards, dedicated to Chinese currency accounts, will be accepted in over 180 countries, offering Maldivians a wider range of secure payment options.
