President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that the Government will fully support the outcome of the upcoming referendum on the administrative structure of Addu City.
Speaking in Fonadhoo during his ongoing tour of Laamu atoll, the President reiterated the Government’s stance on the upcoming referendum, which will determine whether separate councils are to be established for Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo in Addu Atoll.
The President said the referendum fulfils a pledge he made to address the longstanding requests of residents from these islands, who have called for greater administrative autonomy. He stated the decision to hold a public referendum was taken to ensure that the final outcome reflects the will of the people, adding that the Government is committed to supporting whichever decision is made.
President Dr Muizzu explained that Addu City currently receives a single block grant for the entire city. However, if residents vote in favour of forming separate councils, each island will receive its own block grant. Based on population and other factors, Feydhoo would receive around MVR 25 million, Hulhudhoo approximately MVR 13 to 14 million, and Meedhoo about MVR 18 million.
The public referendum is scheduled for Saturday.
